1. “To Whom” – When to Use

• Whom is the object of a verb or preposition.

• To is a preposition here, so the structure is: preposition + whom.

Examples:

• “To whom should I address this letter?”

• “This gift is for the person to whom I spoke yesterday.”

Tip: You can check by swapping with him/her/them:

• “I spoke to him yesterday” → object → correct: “to whom I spoke yesterday.”

2. When NOT to Use “To Whom”

• Do not use whom as the subject:

  • Wrong: “To whom is calling you?”

  • Correct: “Who is calling you?”

• Avoid overly formal use in casual speech:

  • Formal: “To whom it may concern.”

  • Casual: “Who should I send this to?”
